Lock emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. A key snaps off in the front door as you are leaving for work. The shop's front lock refuses to turn at closing time. You come home to find the back door forced and the latch hanging loose. In those moments, you need clear information quickly: what to do right now, who to call, and what will happen next.
This guide explains how we handle urgent lock problems in Bondi Junction and nearby suburbs — and, just as importantly, what we do not promise.
First, our honest hours
Lizzy Locksmith Bondi Junction is open 7 days, 8:00am – 7:00pm. We are not a 24/7 service, and we will not pretend to be one.
That matters, because "24/7 emergency locksmith" is one of the most heavily advertised phrases in the trade. Some of those advertisements lead to genuine local businesses with night staff. Others lead to call centres that pass your job to whoever is available, sometimes from far away and sometimes at prices you only learn when they arrive. We would rather tell you the truth about when we can help.
If your problem happens during our hours, call us straight away. If it happens late in the evening, call anyway — we will tell you honestly whether we can reach you before close. If it happens overnight, send a quote request and we will contact you after we open.
What counts as a locksmith emergency?
A locksmith emergency is any lock problem that leaves your property unsafe, or leaves you unable to get in or out. Common examples:
- A key snapped in the lock. The broken piece often blocks the cylinder.
- A lock that will not turn or latch. The door cannot be secured.
- A forced or damaged door. After an attempted break-in, the lock or strike may no longer hold.
- A shopfront lock failing at close. The business cannot be locked up.
- Lost or stolen keys with your address. Someone may be able to get in.
- A lockout with someone vulnerable inside, such as a child or an elderly person.
If anyone is in danger — a child alone inside with a hazard, a medical emergency, or an intruder — call 000 first. Emergency services come before a locksmith.
What is usually not an emergency
Some lock problems feel urgent but can safely wait for a scheduled visit, which is usually cheaper:
- A key that has been getting stiffer for weeks but still works.
- A loose handle that still operates the latch.
- Wanting to add a deadlock or window locks.
- Wanting to rekey after moving in, if the previous occupants are known and trusted.
If you are unsure, call and describe the situation. We will tell you honestly whether it needs same-day attention.
What to do while you wait
If a key has snapped
Leave the broken piece where it is. Do not push other objects into the keyway, and do not try to glue it. Those attempts often push the fragment deeper or damage the pins, turning a simple extraction into a replacement.
If the door has been forced
Do not touch more than you need to if you plan to report it to police; they may want to see the damage. Take photos. If the door will not close at all, keep valuables out of sight and, if it is safe to stay, wait nearby.
If the lock will not turn
Do not force the key, and do not use pliers on it. Check whether the door is pulling on the lock — sometimes pushing or lifting the door slightly takes pressure off the bolt. If it still will not turn, stop and call. Forcing it is the most common way keys snap.
If you are locked out
Check every other door and window you are entitled to use, and anyone who might hold a spare. Do not break a window; repairing glass usually costs more than a lockout. See our guide Locked Out? What to Do First.
What happens when you call us
- We ask a few quick questions: your suburb, the type of property, what has happened, whether the property is currently secure and whether anyone is at risk.
- We confirm a realistic time. We only promise a time we can actually meet, based on our location and what is already booked.
- We explain the likely cost once we understand the job, before we start.
- On site, we make the door secure first. Sometimes that is a full repair or replacement on the spot. Sometimes it is a safe temporary fix today and the proper part on a follow-up visit.
- We test everything with you and explain anything that still needs attention.

How to avoid an overpriced emergency callout
Urgent situations make people vulnerable to poor practices. A few simple checks protect you:
- Ask for the business name and address. A real local business can tell you where it is. Ours is 500 Oxford St, Bondi Junction NSW 2022.
- Ask for a price before work starts. Not just a callout fee — the likely total.
- Be wary of an immediate offer to drill. Many locks can be opened or extracted without destruction. Drilling should be explained, not assumed.
- Ask what lock they are fitting if a replacement is needed, and whether a cheaper option would work.
- Get a receipt showing the business details and the work done.
Our guide What to Ask Before Hiring a Locksmith has a fuller checklist.
Proof of entitlement
Before opening a locked door, any reputable locksmith will ask for reasonable proof that you are entitled to enter. That could be ID showing the address, a lease, strata paperwork, or confirmation from the owner or building manager. If your ID is inside, tell us when you call; often we can open the door and check your ID once inside.
This is not bureaucracy for its own sake. It is the same protection you would want if someone else claimed to live in your home.
After the emergency
Once the immediate problem is solved, it is worth thinking about prevention:
- Repair stiff locks early. Most snapped keys happen in locks that were getting harder to turn. See lock repair.
- Rekey after lost keys if they could be linked to your address. See lock rekeying.
- Strengthen the door after a break-in with a reinforced strike plate or a better lock. See security locksmith.
- Keep a spare key with someone you trust nearby.
Emergencies at businesses
For shops and offices around Oxford Street and the Bondi Junction mall area, the classic emergency is a front lock failing at closing time. Commercial locks take far more use than residential ones, and they usually warn you with stiffness or a latch that does not catch properly. Regular servicing prevents most failures. If your shop lock is getting harder to use, book a commercial locksmith visit before it fails.
Emergencies in apartment buildings
Apartment towers around the Bondi Junction interchange bring their own complications. Entry doors are often fire-rated, the building may control which hardware can be fitted, and common-area doors belong to the owners corporation rather than to you. In an emergency we can usually secure your own apartment door straight away. For building entry doors, lift access or car park gates, the building manager normally needs to be involved. If you have their number, have it ready when you call.
Temporary fixes in apartments also need care. A fire door must still close and latch properly, so we avoid any temporary measure that would stop it doing its job. If the right replacement part is not on hand, we make the door secure and safe in the meantime and return with the correct hardware.
Prepare now, before anything goes wrong
A few minutes of preparation makes any future lock emergency much easier:
- Save our number — 02 6423 0404 — in your phone under "Locksmith".
- Know your lock. Take a photo of each external lock and note any brand name. It helps us bring the right parts.
- Keep proof of address handy, ideally a digital copy on your phone.
- Agree on a spare key holder nearby.
- Note your building manager's contact details if you live in an apartment.
Questions people ask about emergency callouts
Can you come straight away? It depends on where we are and what is booked. We will give you an honest time on the call.
Will it cost more than a normal job? Urgent work can cost more because it displaces other bookings or needs parts on the day. We tell you before starting.
Can you make my door secure tonight if the part has to be ordered? Usually, yes. We make it safe now and fit the permanent part on a follow-up visit.
